Description
That musty smell when the air-con starts?
In many apartments and homes, air travels through metres of flexible ducting before it reaches the room. Over time, dust settles into the convolutions of the duct bore — and where there’s dust and a bit of condensation, mould has what it needs. The result is the stale, musty note a lot of people notice when the system first kicks on.
There can be other causes, and it’s worth ruling out the obvious ones. But if the smell arrives with the air conditioning and fades when it’s off, the ductwork is a reasonable place to look.
Why cleaning and a UV lamp don’t fully solve it
The inner core of flexible duct is a thin polyester film laminate bonded around a steel wire helix. It’s thin enough that manufacturers and NADCA both caution against aggressive brushing or air-whipping — and on a run buried in a ceiling you often can’t get equipment to it at all.
A germicidal lamp only works in its direct line of sight. Any bend, any shadow, and the light doesn’t reach. It treats the air passing the unit, not the metres of duct downstream.
The InDuct treats the air that travels through it
The BioZone InDuct fits inside the ductwork — into the supply, return or fresh-air duct. A specialist UV lamp reacts with the oxygen and water vapour already in the passing air to create photoplasma — a short-lived, reactive mix of hydroxyl radicals, oxygen singlets, ions and a minimal amount of ozone.
That mix is then carried by your system’s own airflow to every surface downstream — around bends, along the liner, and out to each room grille.
Odours and VOCs — broken down, not masked
Plug-ins, sprays and scented filters add fragrance on top of a smell; the compound is still circulating. Photoplasma oxidises odour molecules and volatile organic compounds directly as the air passes through.
| Everyday odours | VOCs & chemical gases |
|---|---|
| Musty and damp smells Cooking odours — fried food, curry, fish Pet and litter-tray odours Bathroom and laundry smells on the return air Cigarette smoke residue |
Formaldehyde — new carpet, cabinetry, engineered timber Off-gassing from fresh paint and furniture Cleaning-product and aerosol residues Benzene and related compounds Ammonia and hydrogen sulfide |
How the ozone level compares — Australian reference points
Residential selection normally uses the 0.013 ppm (13 ppb) column. For context:
| Reference | Level |
|---|---|
| InDuct typical residential design setting | 13 ppb |
| NEPM ambient air quality standard, Australia (8-hour average) | 65 ppb |
| Safe Work Australia workplace exposure standard for ozone | 100 ppb (0.1 ppm) |
Australia has no binding residential indoor ozone standard, so there is no perfect benchmark. The figures above are an ambient outdoor standard and a workplace standard respectively — offered as context, not as an approval. Safe Work Australia is replacing its Workplace Exposure Standards with Workplace Exposure Limits from 1 December 2026.
What the ID-30 covers
The ID-30 is sized for smaller single-zone systems — typically apartments, townhouses and compact 2–3 bedroom homes. Coverage below is the maximum floor area treated at a given nominal ozone concentration.
| Nominal ozone concentration | Max coverage |
|---|---|
| 0.007 ppm | 200 m² |
| 0.013 ppm (typical setting) | 115 m² |
| 0.020 ppm | 75 m² |
| 0.050 ppm | 31 m² |
Ceiling height and how strong the problem is also factor in. Not sure? Tell us about your system and we’ll size it for you.

Fitting is a straightforward job
A qualified installer cuts a single 70 mm hole in the duct, fits the rubber seal ring, and secures the unit against the duct wall. Six steps, no ceilings opened, no ductwork replaced. A single lead runs to a standard outlet.
What to expect — and what not to
We’d rather set this out before you buy than have the conversation afterwards.
- It controls and suppresses — it doesn’t remediate. If there’s already established, visible mould growth, this unit won’t remove it. Physical remediation comes first; the InDuct helps keep it from returning.
- It’s not a substitute for fixing a source. A damp subfloor, leaking shower, blocked condensate drain or wet wall cavity needs fixing at the source — treating the supply air won’t solve it.
- Results build up. The unit runs continuously at low output rather than shock-dosing. Most people notice a difference in odour over days to weeks, and the effect depends on how much your system actually runs.
- Results vary, genuinely. Floor area, ceiling height, airflow, humidity, duct layout, occupancy and source strength all change the outcome. Laboratory figures were produced under controlled conditions and aren’t a number you’ll measure at home.
- Sizing is based on what you tell us. If the actual space is significantly larger or the system is zoned differently than described, the model may be undersized for the result you wanted. If you’re unsure of your numbers, say so.
- The lamp is a consumable. Output falls away as it ages — a unit running a three-year-old lamp is not doing what it did when fitted. Annual replacement is how it keeps working.
- Installation must be done by a qualified person. It cuts into ductwork and connects to mains power. Not a DIY job, and a poorly sealed opening will cost you airflow.

Important · please read. The BioZone InDuct provides ongoing air disinfection and odour control — it helps suppress and reduce the airborne odour and microbial load in the treated air. It does not sterilise your home and is not a substitute for normal cleaning, ventilation, or remediation of an underlying moisture or contamination source; results vary with the size of the home, airflow, humidity and how the system is used. The unit produces only minimal, low-level ozone as a by-product; it must be installed by a qualified person and the lamp replaced annually to maintain output. This is general product information and not a guarantee of a specific outcome; final model selection follows a review of your system.
